This is the tenth part of our Toyota name series. This list like previous ones, features common names. Each name has a date of when the car’s production started.

CALDINA

Inspired by the Italian (and English) adjective “cardinal,” meaning “essential” or “fundamental.”

 November.16,1992. Very popular among other JDM cars in Uganda. This is the station wagon model of what was locally nicknamed “Kibina”, a saloon Corona.

Curren

 The meaning is the same as in English “Current”. January.27,1994. Was also popular in the mid and late 90s.

COROLLA

A “corolla” is the ring of petals around the central part of a flower. The name was intended to evoke the image of a beautifully styled, eye-catching compact car. November. 5,1966. Whether sold as a JDM or tropicalized model, this is perhaps the most recognizable name in the Toyota stable and in Uganda it is sometimes confused with Corona.

COROLLA AXIO

“Axio” comes from the Greek word “axia” (“value” or “quality”). October.10,2006

COROLLA FX

The FX sub name was derived from the first and last letters of “FF 2-box.” October. 3,1984. It was a very popular hatchback at the time it debuted here in the 1990s. A few still exist but it was replaced with the Allex and RUNX.

COROLLA CERES

“Ceres” comes from Roman mythology. May 18,1992. This one was also somehow popular.
